When family members, friends, and others begin encouraging somebody to look into assisted living, they may see that as a loss of independence. The best way to make a move to assisted living and be viewed in a positive light is to focus on attitude.

Developing a positive attitude about anything in life can certainly be challenging, especially for somebody who doesn’t have a great deal of experience with this. Here are four steps that may help the senior in your life develop a more positive attitude about assisted living.

Step #1: Learn about all of the activities and benefits of assisted living.

Many, many years ago assisted living was much different than it is today. Today’s assisted living facilities have state-of-the-art exercise rooms, entertainment facilities, and more. When the senior learns about all of the different activities, rooms, and other benefits of assisted living it becomes easier to be positive about this prospective move.

Step #2: Focus on making friends.

When an elderly individual spends most of their time alone at home, it can lead to an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other emotional issues. When moving into an assisted living facility, that same senior will be exposed to numerous other elderly individuals who share common interests and with whom they could become can become friends.

When surrounded by friends it’s tough to be negative all the time.

Step #3: Don’t worry about the cost.

As far as expenses are concerned, assisted living is one of the more affordable options. Some types of home care can actually be more expensive than assisted living. Assisted living is also much cheaper than nursing home care and the environment is much more enjoyable.

Step #4: Stay active.

When moving into assisted living, the senior should be focused on staying as active as possible. This means getting involved in the various activities that are available, going for walks on the grounds, and spending time with other elderly individuals who also live there.

The more active a person is, the easier it will be for them to remain positive.

During the first couple of days and maybe weeks the senior may be lonely, homesick, or have a negative attitude. Over time this can change. October is Positive Attitude Month and for any senior who is moving into assisted living, there is much to be positive about.
