Keeping Cool and Safe within the Comfort of Assisted Living

Assisted Living in Pascagoula AL

Summer is the time of the year when people spend more time outdoors. The warm weather, bright sunshine, and longer daylight hours allows them to participate in more activities, such as work in their Assisted Living in Pascagoula ALgardens, go to the pool, or attend an outdoor concert.  Spending time outdoors is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle, especially for seniors.

Many assisted living facilities have some type of grounds where the residents can walk around and enjoy the beautiful weather. These grounds could include flower gardens, walking paths, benches, and more. It’s important for seniors to focus on safety and pay attention to their health whenever they spend a significant amount of time outdoors.

What defines ‘significant’ with regard to the amount of time somebody spends outside?

That all depends on the temperature and the elderly individual’s physical capabilities. The higher the temperature and the higher the humidity, the more difficult it can become for seniors to remain cool since they don’t tend to sweat as much.  As such, it’s important that they drink more fluids to help encourage perspiration to remain cool.

They should also avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially on those extremely hot days.  It may be more practical to avoid going outside during the peak sunlight hours, between 11 AM and 3 PM. Even though the temperature may not begin to drop until 5PM or 6 PM, the sun’s direct power will begin to diminish after 3 o’clock in many parts of the country. By the evening, the temperature could be ideal for spending some time outside for people of all ages.

It’s important for everyone, especially seniors, to remain safe and be knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses.
