Planning a Trip with Mom After She Moved into Assisted Living

Assisted Living in Satsuma AL

It took a long time, but your mother finally realized that assisted living is a great option for her. During the past few weeks she has been adjusting, getting to know the other residents, making Assisted-Living-in-Satsuma-ALfriends, and staying active. Now that summer is here and in full swing, you want to support her in the best way possible.

You can do that by helping her pursue some common interests or allow her the opportunity to see places she’s always wanted to visit, but never had the time, money, or somebody to do those things with her.

July is National Parks and Recreation Month and if you’re planning a trip with your mother, here are some things you want to think about in planning this endeavor.

Determine how long she will be in the car or airplane.

In most cases, you’re probably going to be either driving to your destination or flying there. If you’re planning to drive and it’s going to take many hours or even a couple of days, you will need to plan in a lot of extra stops.

Your mother will likely require more restroom breaks and it will be incredibly beneficial for her to get out more frequently to walk around, stretch her legs, and get blood flowing properly throughout the body. As people get older and begin taking certain prescription medications, the risk of blood clots can increase, especially when they are sitting in the same position for many hours.

Encourage your mother to pack properly.

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean the weather is going to be hot all day, all evening, and throughout the night. Your mother should pack plenty of warm clothing for those cooler evenings and mornings.

She should also pack comfortable walking shoes and if she requires a cane or walker to get around, you want to check with your destination to determine handicap accessibility. Not all parks offer handicap accessibility at all areas of the park.

Make sure this is something she wants to do.

You might be planning a surprise and knew your mother wanted to visit a certain place in the past, but she may not have any interest. Be sure to discuss this with her before making those plans. If she doesn’t seem to want to do it because she doesn’t want to put you out, that’s one thing, but if she truly seems genuine and sincere in her desire to remain home, in her new assisted living community this summer with her friends, respect that first.
