Does Technology Play a Role in Assisted Living?

Technology is just about everywhere in today’s life. We see technology in retail shops, with our phones and other communication devices, in healthcare, and almost every other aspect of modern life. When it comes to assisted living, technology is also a component of these facilities, but how much varies from one place to the next.

Is it all that important?

When people think about assisted living and technology, they might not view it as being all that important. After all, seniors are the ones living in these facilities. Seniors didn’t grow up with personal computers. A lot of them might use smart phones and tablets and may have some experience with personal computers, including desktop and laptop systems, but they may or may not have all that much experience with the systems beyond the basics.

So, why would technology be all that important?

Technology can be an integral aspect of many living situations for a wide range of reasons. First and foremost, technology is a great way for people to stay in communication with their family members and friends, whether they live in town or across the country or even around the world.

Modern phone systems, video teleconferencing, and even communicating through social media like Facebook are all highly effective ways for people to stay in close contact with the people who matter most in their life.

Technology can also help people reach out when assistance is needed.

When a person is at home living alone and the years are pressing on them, they may become nervous, withdrawn, or even anxious about their own safety. There are medical alert devices that can help them notify somebody in the event of an emergency or other crisis, but some decide that assisted living offers more comfort to them.

With modern technology, some facilities may be equipped with assistive devices and other technology that can notify staff when help is required or when an emergency situation might be arising.

Security is also improved with technology.

While being safe and secure is one of the most important aspects of life for people as they get older, it should never take a backseat to the desire for privacy. With advanced technology, an assisted living community can provide a safer environment for all of the residents while also maintaining the privacy those same residents desire.

Going on a tour of the facility is the best way to understand how technology plays a role in that particular assisted living community.
