Talking About Assisted Living Doesn’t Mean You Don’t Care

Assisted Living in Citronelle AL

One of the easiest things people think when they want to talk to an aging parent or other loved one about assisted living is that they just don’t care. “If I talk to mom about this,” you might think, Assisted-Living-in-Citronelle-AL“she’s just going to assume I don’t want to take care of her or have her move in with me.”

That’s not true. In fact, the more you learn about assisted living, the more you’ll begin to realize that it’s a great option for seniors who may be having a bit of difficulty tending to their own care at home.

Even though your mother might not be having a lot of trouble doesn’t mean she wouldn’t benefit from assisted living. There are plenty of benefits assisted living can offer seniors, whether they require extra help during the day or are mostly still independent.

What your mother could expect from assisted living.

When you want to bring up the topic of assisted living with your mother, make sure you bring up the benefits first and foremost, as opposed to talking about the things you’ve noticed about your mother that cause you concern.

First, she would be able to meet other seniors who may share the same interests. When seniors get older, especially if they’re living alone and may no longer be able to drive safely, they have a tendency to become lonelier. There might be many factors that lead to this, but when she considers assisted living, she could end up finding plenty to do and making so many new friends she wouldn’t spend much time alone in her room (because she wouldn’t want to).

Second, there would be plenty of experienced staff members there to help her when she needed it. That doesn’t mean she would require help often, or even at all, but it’s always nice to know there are those ready to help out when you need it.

Third, at assisted living there are so many activities to enjoy. Your mother would be able to find plenty of things to do, whether she wants to do them alone or with some of her new friends.

She might even discover that some of her closest friends are at a particular facility, and if she decides to talk to them, she’ll likely realize it’s something worth considering for herself.

You do care, and she’ll know that.

When you explain the benefits and your concerns about her at home all alone, your mother will know you care. What the rest of your family may think shouldn’t matter; you know now that assisted living is a wonderful option for seniors.
