Assisted Living Might Be a Topic to Discuss Again Following a Hospitalization

Assisted Living in Chickasaw AL

For several months Tina and her husband had been trying to convince her mother to consider assisted living. Once she lost her husband of 58 years, Tina had worried about her mother’s well-Assisted-Living-Chickasaw-ALbeing. At the time, she wasn’t interested in even considering the prospect of moving from the home she shared with her husband and raised Tina and her two sisters for more than 45 years.

After the hospitalization, though, following the heart attack, Tina was once again concerned about how her mother was going to manage caring for herself. Tina lived more than two hours away, on a good day. With traffic on most days, that drive tended to be three or more hours each way.

When she was hospitalized, Tina’s husband sat down with her and mentioned that this might be the time to discuss assisted living once again. After somebody is hospitalized, especially if they reach a certain age, they may be more inclined to pay attention to words of wisdom or advice from loved ones, especially those who have their best interest at heart.

How to strike up the conversation again.

At the time, Tina’s mother became agitated and upset, so much so that she had to ask Tina and her husband to leave the last time they had mentioned assisted living. Tina worried that the same situation was going to arise again because she couldn’t see her mother changing her mind at this point in time.

A good way to strike up a conversation a second time after the senior has been hospitalized is to ask questions about how well she is getting along with her own basic care. The senior may now realize just how difficult it is to keep things safe and in good perspective. She may also finally realize that she doesn’t have the ability to get around as well as she used to, feels lonely at times, and wishes she could spend time with friends or seniors her own age who share similar interests.

Instead of bringing up the topic of assisted living directly, by asking certain questions and finding out the interests and what the senior would like to do, this could open the doorway to explaining that assisted living is very well a great option that can not only help keep her safer, but also provide a higher quality of life as a result.
