Assisted Living Communities May Help Seniors Feel Better About A Lot of Things

Daphne, AL – Assisted Living May Help Seniors Feel Better

Tom was adamantly against his family’s suggestion of moving to an assisted living community. The last thing he wanted to consider was packing up his belongings and moving from the house he living in for the last 45 years. He and his wife had purchased this home when their children were quite young. After she passed away three years ago, he seemed to spend more and more time alone.Assisted Living Daphne AL

At times he would call on his youngest son, who only lived a few miles away, to come over and help him with certain maintenance issues with the house. Each time his son would come over, he would mention that his father should consider another living arrangement.

“The house is just too big for you, dad,” was something Tom got used to hearing. For a while, Tom was able to dismiss the suggestion and the topic would be dropped. In recent months, though, he required more direct care for himself. He was having difficulty getting up and down the stairs and, on occasion, would struggle to get in and out of bed. He also found himself dealing with a number of health issues.

As these issues continued to mount, Tom felt as though the best years of his life were behind him and that he didn’t have any purpose in life. The more his family talked about assisted living, the more he began to seriously consider that option. Finally he relented and agreed to look into various facilities throughout the area. He still wanted to keep in contact with those friends of his who were still alive, some of whom had already moved into an assisted living facility.

Eventually he decided on a facility where three of his friends lived.  They couldn’t say enough wonderful things about their community.  Within the first few weeks, Tom was experiencing new activities he never thought he would try. He was playing bridge with a number of other residents, watching new movies, playing bingo, and having a great time. His self-esteem increased with each passing day, and it was all due to his decision to finally commit to moving to assisted living.

February is International Boost Self Esteem Month and for an elderly individual who may be dealing with numerous challenges living at home alone, assisted living could help them feel great about their life once again.
