Assisted Living and Vision Challenges

Assisted Living in Chickasaw AL

The first time Amanda’s family mentioned the prospect that she should consider assisted living as a more viableAssisted Living in Chickasaw AL option for her, she didn’t even want to listen. After all, even though she was 83 years old, she thought of herself as being able to tend to her basic care pretty well. However, she had to admit that she was relying on some family members, friends, and even neighbors a bit more often as the years progressed.

After some lengthy discussions, Amanda started listening to what her family was saying and started looking into various options with regard to assisted living in the area. Her son wanted her to move closer to him and his family, but she wanted to remain in the area, where she had lived for the past 30 years, and where she had numerous friends and other ties to the community.

She eventually decided on one particular assisted living facility where a good friend of hers had been living for the past year.  Before she was set to move in, Amanda began noticing issues with her vision. She was starting to have difficulty seeing, experiencing occasional blurriness, the sense of cloudiness over her field of vision, and other problems. She made an appointment with her eye doctor and was diagnosed as having glaucoma. By the time she was moving into the assisted living facility, she was having some more difficulties with her vision. She hadn’t anticipated these problems when she was looking for a specific facility, and she was glad that the staff members there were highly experienced in helping other seniors with various health problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and even glaucoma.

On every wall and in every room there were handrails that could help a person navigate throughout the facility, even if they had extreme vision loss. This provided Amanda a great deal of comfort knowing she wouldn’t get lost or end up stumbling down an open stairwell.

There may be numerous challenges that Amanda will have to face in the future, but thanks to the right assisted living facility, she knew she was going to have a great deal of help and it was a much better option than remaining in her house.
