3 Common Misconceptions about Assisted Living

Theodore, AL – 3 Common Misconceptions about Assisted Living

Introducing the idea of moving into assisted living to an elderly loved one may feel very uncomfortable.  A lot of people hold negative feelings about assisted living.  This feelings could be fueled by common myths and misconceptions.  Below are three common misconceptions many people have about assisted living.

1. Moving into one of these facilities means that no one will visit anymore.Assisted Living Theodore AL

Many seniors fear that if they move into an assisted living facility their family and friends won’t really visit any longer.  They may think that since the facility has staff members available around-the-clock to help out with a variety of tasks, there’s no ‘reason’ for their family to visit much.

In reality, assisted living communities are designed to help reduce anxiety and stress for seniors and provide them with the optimal level of care and support.  Thus, the quality of time spent with family and friends improves.

2. Moving will mean giving up certain activities.

If the senior enjoys gardening, for example, they might assume that having to move will mean giving up this pasttime or hobby. In truth, moving into a community environment usually increases the number of activities that are available. In fact, many assisted living communities offer gardening areas, have fitness programs, book clubs, game nights, and a host of other activities that their residents find incredibly beneficial and enjoyable.

3. This will mean losing more independence.

Just because the senior is moving into an assisted living facility doesn’t mean they give up their independence. Most of these communities offer privacy for all of their residents. If the senior doesn’t want to be involved in various activities and prefers to spend more time in his or her room, he or she has every right to do that.

The more people know about assisted living, the easier it is to move past the myths.  If you or an aging loved one are considering Assisted Living near Theordore, AL, contact Ashbury Manor Specialty Care and Assisted Living at 251-317-3017.
